Fiber Optic Cable 12-Wire Sequence

The standard 12-fiber color sequence for fiber optic cables is: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate (Gray), White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, and Aqua.

Standard 12-Color Sequence

Under the TIA-598-C standard, the universal 12-color sequence is used to identify individual fibers in a cable. The sequence is as follows:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua (Light Blue)

This sequence repeats for cables with more than 12 fibers, ensuring consistent identification across multi-fiber cables .

Application in Multi-Fiber Cables

For high-count cables (e.g., 24, 48, 96, 144 fibers), the 12-color sequence is applied at two levels:

  • Buffer Tube Level: Each tube in a loose-tube cable is assigned a color from the 12-color sequence.
  • Fiber Level: Inside each tube, the individual fibers follow the same 12-color sequence.

For example, in a 144-fiber cable, fiber #45 would be located in the 4th tube (Brown) and be the 9th fiber (Yellow) within that tube . This dual-level color coding ensures accurate fiber identification, splicing, and connector mapping in complex installations .

Practical Considerations
  • Connector Mapping: MPO/MTP connectors often use the 12-color sequence to maintain polarity and fiber order.
  • European Variations: Some European standards extend the sequence to 16 colors for high-density ribbon cables, adding Olive, Magenta, Tan, and Lime .
  • Jacket Colors: The outer jacket color can indicate fiber type (e.g., yellow for single-mode, aqua for OM3/OM4 multimode).

Using this standardized sequence helps prevent splicing errors, ensures proper routing, and simplifies maintenance in FTTH, ODN, data center, and backbone networks .
