What are the components of an optical cable cross-section structure

An optical cable cross-section consists of a central core, surrounding cladding, protective buffer coatings, and an outer sheath with strength members.Core

The core is the innermost part of the optical fiber and is responsible for carrying light signals. It is typically made of ultra-pure silica glass, sometimes doped with materials like germanium dioxide (GeO₂) to modify the refractive index. Core diameters vary depending on fiber type: single-mode fibers usually have a core around 9 microns, while multimode fibers can range from 50 to 100 microns in diameter . The core has a higher refractive index than the surrounding cladding, which confines light via total internal reflection .

Cladding

Surrounding the core is the cladding, also made of silica glass but with a slightly lower refractive index (≈1% lower than the core). The cladding ensures that light remains trapped in the core and prevents signal loss. Its diameter is typically standardized at 125 microns for most fibers .

Buffer Coating

The buffer coating or protective layer surrounds the cladding to protect the fiber from mechanical damage, moisture, and microbending losses. This layer is usually made of polymer materials such as acrylate and can be one or two layers thick. Typical buffer diameters range from 250 to 900 microns depending on the cable design .

Strength Members and Outer Sheath

For additional protection, fibers are incorporated into a cable structure. The cable may include strength members made of steel, Kevlar, or other materials to provide tensile strength and prevent stretching. The entire assembly is encased in an outer sheath, often made of polyethylene, which protects against environmental factors like moisture, abrasion, and UV exposure .

Summary

In a cross-sectional view, an optical cable typically shows:

  • Core: central light-carrying region
  • Cladding: concentric layer with lower refractive index
  • Buffer coating: protective polymer layer
  • Strength members: optional fibers or rods for mechanical support
  • Outer sheath: protective outer layer This layered structure ensures efficient light transmission, mechanical durability, and environmental protection, making optical cables suitable for telecommunications, data networks, and industrial applications .
