What are fiber optic couplers

Fiber optic couplers are passive devices that split or combine light signals, controlling the flow of data in optical networks.Function and Purpose

Fiber optic couplers serve as the traffic managers of light signals in fiber optic systems, enabling the distribution or combination of optical signals between two or more fibers . They allow a single input signal to be split into multiple outputs or multiple input signals to be combined into a single output, facilitating efficient data routing without the need for electrical power . This capability is essential for applications such as telecommunications, cable television networks, local area networks, and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) systems .

Working Principle

Couplers operate based on optical phenomena such as refraction, reflection, interference, and evanescent coupling . In evanescent coupling, light traveling in one fiber extends slightly beyond the core into the cladding. When two fiber cores are brought very close together, the evanescent wave overlaps with the adjacent fiber, allowing light to transfer coherently. The splitting ratio—the proportion of light directed to each output—is controlled by the length of the interaction region and the distance between fiber cores .

Types of Fiber Optic Couplers
  • Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) Couplers: Fibers are twisted, heated, and stretched to fuse cores, enabling light to split between fibers .
  • Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) Couplers: Use optical splitter chips to divide light evenly across multiple outputs, ideal for compact, high-density networks .
  • Wavelength Division Multiplexers (WDM): Combine or separate light of different wavelengths, crucial for multiplexing and demultiplexing in high-capacity systems .
Applications

Fiber optic couplers are used to:

  • Split signals for distribution in passive optical networks (PON) and CATV systems .
  • Combine signals for bidirectional communication or signal monitoring .
  • Extend optical links and connect multimode to single-mode fibers .
  • Enable redundancy and network flexibility, allowing multiple paths for data transmission .
Key Metrics

Performance of couplers is measured by insertion loss, splitting ratio, isolation, return loss, and polarization-dependent loss (PDL), which determine how efficiently light is transferred and distributed . In summary, fiber optic couplers are critical passive components that manage light distribution, enhance network flexibility, and support high-speed, reliable optical communication systems.
