How to use a PoE power supply switch

PoE is usually enabled by default on Cisco switches, but you can manually enable and configure it using the CLI with the power inline auto command.Default Behavior

Most Cisco PoE switches have PoE enabled by default. Simply connecting a powered device (PD) such as an IP phone, wireless access point, or IP camera to a PoE-capable port will allow the switch to automatically detect and supply power if the switch's power budget allows . The switch uses protocols like CDP or LLDP to negotiate the required power with the device .

Manual Configuration Steps
  1. Access the Switch CLI: Connect via console cable or SSH and enter privileged EXEC mode by typing enable .
  2. Enter Global Configuration Mode: Type configure terminal.
  3. Select the Interface: For example, to configure GigabitEthernet0/1, type interface GigabitEthernet0/1.
  4. Enable PoE: Use the command power inline auto to allow the switch to automatically detect and supply power to the connected device .
  5. Optional Settings:
    • Set PoE Priority: Assign priority to critical devices to ensure they receive power first if the switch's budget is limited.
    • Set Maximum Power: Limit the power allocated to a port using power inline max to manage the switch's total PoE budget.
  6. Exit Configuration Mode: Type end to save and exit.
Verification and Monitoring
  • Check PoE Status: Use show power inline to view the status and power consumption of all PoE ports .
  • Per-Port Details: Use show power inline interface for detailed information on a specific port.
  • Interface Status: show interface status confirms if the port is operational and delivering power.
  • LED Indicators: Observe port LEDs to ensure the connected device is powered.
Power Planning Tips
  • List all powered devices and their wattage, then add 25–30% overhead for cable loss and future expansion .
  • Ensure the switch's total PoE budget can support all devices, considering peak startup power.
  • Use StackPower or redundant power supplies if available for reliability.
  • Monitor continuously to prevent overload and check syslog or SNMP traps for PoE errors. By following these steps, you can ensure that your PoE switch reliably powers connected devices while maintaining control over power allocation and monitoring .
