Adding Revit cable tray material

In Revit, cable tray materials are set globally via Object Styles or through view filters, as individual cable tray types do not have a direct material parameter.Using Object Styles

Revit does not allow assigning a material directly in the type or instance properties of cable trays. To apply a material globally:

1. Go to Manage > Object Styles.
2. Select the Cable Tray & Cable Tray Fitting category.
3. Assign the desired material for all cable trays in the project. This method affects all cable trays uniformly across views and 3D models .

Using View Filters

If you need different materials for different cable tray types or services:

1. Create a shared parameter or use the Service Type parameter at the type level.
2. Apply view filters based on this parameter to override line patterns, colors, or transparency in specific views.
3. Assign the filter to the relevant views or view templates. This allows visual differentiation without changing the global Object Styles .

IFC Material Overrides

For projects requiring IFC exports:

1. Set the Service Type for each cable tray type in your template.
2. Use the IfcSingleMaterialOverride parameter to assign materials automatically based on Service Type.
3. This ensures consistent material assignment during modeling and export, avoiding manual updates for each tray .

Practical Tips

• Load all necessary cable tray fittings before modeling to ensure proper routing and automatic generation of elbows, tees, and crosses .
• Avoid manual overrides for each tray, as this can lead to inconsistencies and extra work.
• Use view templates to maintain consistent material visualization across multiple views. By combining Object Styles, view filters, and IFC overrides, you can effectively manage cable tray materials in Revit while accommodating different services and visualization needs.
