Can a disk array be connected to a fiber optic cable

To connect a fiber optic cable to a disk array, install the HBA in the server, insert compatible SFP+ modules, and use LC duplex fiber patch cords to link the server, switches, and storage array, ensuring proper port mapping and redundancy.Step 1: Install the Host Bus Adapter (HBA)

Insert a Fibre Channel HBA into an available PCI-E slot on your server. This card enables the server to communicate with the storage array over the SAN network .

Step 2: Insert SFP+ Optical Modules

Install 8G or compatible SFP+ FC optical modules into the HBA ports and the corresponding ports on the Fibre Channel switch. Choose the module type based on the required transmission distance:

  • OM3 multimode fiber for up to 300m
  • OS2 single-mode fiber for 2km–80km
Step 3: Connect Fiber Patch Cords

Use duplex LC fiber optic patch cords to connect the HBA to the switch and the switch to the storage array. Ensure that transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) ports are correctly aligned to avoid signal issues .

Step 4: Connect the Storage Array
  • Connect port 1 on the top controller to the first switch (fault domain one) and port 1 on the bottom controller to the same switch for redundancy.
  • Connect port 2 on the top controller to the second switch (fault domain two) and repeat for the bottom controller .
  • If the array has multiple controllers, connect the A port of one controller to the B port of the other for internal communication.
Step 5: Power and Management Ports

Plug in the power cords and secure them with clips. Connect the management ports on each controller to the network for administrative access .

Step 6: Configure the SAN
  • Install the required HBA drivers and firmware on the server.
  • Use the storage management software (e.g., MD Storage Manager) to configure hosts, arrays, and virtual disks .
  • Implement switch zoning to create logical paths between the server and storage array, ensuring redundancy and proper traffic isolation .
Step 7: Verify Connectivity
  • Rescan the storage on the host to detect LUNs.
  • Confirm that the server can access the storage array through both redundant paths.
  • Troubleshoot any connectivity issues by checking cabling, switch zoning, and firmware compatibility .
Additional Tips
  • Always follow the vendor's deployment guide for expansion enclosures or special configurations.
  • Maintain proper bend radius for fiber cables to prevent signal loss.
  • Label all cables and ports for easier maintenance and troubleshooting. By following these steps, you can establish a reliable Fibre Channel connection between your server and disk array, ensuring high-speed data transfer and redundancy.
