Functions of each component in a fiber optic communication system

A fiber optic communication system primarily consists of a transmitter, optical fiber, receiver, and supporting accessories that enable efficient data transmission using light.1. Transmitter

The transmitter converts electrical signals into optical signals for transmission through the fiber. It typically includes a light source (either a Laser Diode (LD) or Light Emitting Diode (LED)) and a source driver circuit that powers the light source and modulates it according to the input signal . Laser diodes are preferred for long-distance, high-speed communication due to their high power, narrow spectral linewidth, and fast modulation capabilities, while LEDs are used for shorter distances and lower data rates . The transmitter may also include an interface to match impedance and convert analog or digital signals appropriately.

2. Optical Fiber

The optical fiber serves as the transmission medium, guiding light from the transmitter to the receiver. It consists of three main layers :

  • Core: The innermost part where light propagates, made of glass or plastic.
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index to ensure total internal reflection, keeping light confined within the core.
  • Coating/Buffer Jacket: Protects the fiber from mechanical damage, moisture, and environmental stress. Additional layers like Kevlar may be included to enhance tensile strength. Fibers are classified as single-mode (SMF) for long-distance, high-speed transmission, or multi-mode (MMF) for shorter distances with multiple light paths . The choice of fiber affects bandwidth, attenuation, and transmission distance.
3. Receiver

The receiver converts the optical signal back into an electrical signal. It typically includes a fiber-to-detector coupler, a photodetector (such as a photodiode), a current-to-voltage converter, and an amplifier to restore signal strength . The receiver may also include an interface to deliver the signal in a usable analog or digital form.

4. Accessories and Supporting Components

Additional components ensure reliable and efficient operation :

  • Connectors and Couplers: Join fibers and connect them to transmitters or receivers.
  • Splices: Permanently join two fiber ends with minimal loss.
  • Amplifiers/Repeaters: Boost signal strength for long-distance transmission.
  • Multiplexing Devices: Combine multiple signals for transmission over a single fiber.
5. Optional Transducers

For non-electrical messages, transducers convert physical signals (like sound or images) into electrical signals before transmission. Examples include microphones for audio and cameras for video .

Summary

A fiber optic communication system relies on the transmitter, optical fiber, receiver, and supporting accessories to transmit data efficiently using light. The system's performance depends on the type of fiber, light source, and additional components like amplifiers, connectors, and splices, which together enable high-speed, long-distance, and interference-free communication .
