A PV combiner box centralizes multiple solar panel strings, connecting each string through fuses to a DC busbar, then through a DC isolator to the inverter, while providing surge protection and grounding.Overview

A PV combiner box is a weatherproof enclosure installed between the solar array and the inverter. It collects DC outputs from multiple strings, provides overcurrent protection via fuses or DC breakers, limits surge voltage with DC surge protective devices (SPDs), and allows safe disconnection through a DC isolator switch . It simplifies wiring, reduces cable runs, and enhances system safety and maintainability .

Typical Wiring Path

The standard wiring flow inside a DC combiner box is:

  • Positive conductor of each PV string → string fuse or DC breaker → positive busbar → DC isolator → inverter DC positive input
  • Negative conductor of each PV string → negative busbar → inverter DC negative input
  • PV module frames/equipment grounding → PE (protective earth) bar → site grounding system
  • DC SPD → connected across DC conductors and protective earth Each string is connected in parallel, so voltage remains roughly the same while current adds up. The combiner box does not put panels in series; series connections are made in the field to form each string .

  1. DC Fuses or Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) – Protect individual strings from overcurrent and isolate faulty strings .
  2. Busbars – Central points for positive and negative string connections.
  3. DC Isolator Switch – Provides a safe disconnect point for maintenance or emergency shutdown .
  4. Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) – Protect the system from transient overvoltages caused by lightning or switching events .
  5. PE Ground Bar – Ensures proper grounding of module frames and combiner box enclosure.
