Core and Aggregation Switch Configuration

Core switches form the high-speed backbone of a network, while aggregation switches consolidate traffic from access switches and forward it to the core, often using link aggregation for redundancy and higher bandwidth.Roles and Functions

Core Switches: Core switches operate at the top layer of a hierarchical network and are responsible for high-speed routing and switching between distribution or aggregation layers. They handle large volumes of traffic, provide ultra-low latency, and ensure fault tolerance and high availability. Core switches typically support advanced Layer 3 features, sophisticated routing protocols, and high throughput to maintain network backbone performance . Aggregation Switches: Aggregation switches sit between access and core layers, collecting traffic from multiple access switches, wireless access points, or edge devices. They consolidate this traffic and forward it to core switches, optimizing bandwidth and simplifying network management. Aggregation switches often support both Layer 2 and Layer 3 functions, VLANs, Quality of Service (QoS), and link aggregation protocols like LACP or static link aggregation to combine multiple physical links into a single logical connection for redundancy and higher throughput .

Configuration Considerations
  1. Link Aggregation: Aggregation switches often use IEEE 802.3ad (LACP) to bundle multiple Ethernet interfaces into a single logical link, called a Link Aggregation Group (LAG). This increases uplink bandwidth and provides failover if one link fails. All member links should ideally have the same speed, and traffic is balanced across the links .
  2. VLAN and Layer 3 Routing: Aggregation switches can implement VLANs to segment traffic and enforce policies. Layer 3 capabilities allow inter-VLAN routing and policy enforcement, which helps reduce congestion before traffic reaches the core .
  3. Redundancy and High Availability: Core switches are often deployed in pairs or clusters to provide redundancy. Aggregation switches can use dual-homed connections to core switches, ensuring continuous connectivity even if one path fails .
  4. Performance Metrics: When configuring core or aggregation switches, consider backplane bandwidth, packet forwarding rate, and port density. Core switches require high forwarding rates to handle aggregated traffic, while aggregation switches must support sufficient throughput to prevent bottlenecks .
  5. Policy Enforcement: Aggregation switches can enforce QoS, ACLs, and traffic shaping to prioritize critical traffic and maintain network performance. Core switches focus on high-speed routing and inter-subnet traffic management .
Best Practices
  • Use a layered approach: access → aggregation → core for scalability and manageability.
  • Implement link aggregation between aggregation and core switches for redundancy and bandwidth optimization.
  • Configure VLANs and Layer 3 routing on aggregation switches to segment traffic efficiently.
  • Monitor performance metrics to ensure switches handle expected traffic loads.
  • Deploy redundant core switches to maintain backbone reliability. By following these principles, core and aggregation switches can be configured to provide a scalable, high-performance, and resilient network infrastructure suitable for enterprise, campus, or data center environments .
