Method for testing the grounding resistance of a distribution box

Grounding resistance of a distribution box can be measured using specialized earth testers, either with a clamp-on method or a traditional multi-electrode setup, to ensure safe and effective grounding.Recommended Methods

1. Clamp-On (Stakeless) Method This method uses a ground clamp meter, such as the Fluke 1630-2 FC or Fluke 1625-2 GEO, to measure resistance without disconnecting the grounding system or driving temporary stakes into the ground. The clamp is placed around the grounding conductor of the distribution box, and the device injects a test current while measuring the resulting voltage drop to calculate resistance. This method is particularly useful when parallel grounds exist or when driving stakes is impractical . 2. Traditional Three- or Four-Electrode Method This involves placing auxiliary electrodes (stakes) in the soil at measured distances from the grounding electrode of the distribution box. A current is injected through one electrode, and the voltage is measured between the other electrodes. The ground resistance is then calculated using Ohm's law. Typically, stakes are spaced about 20 meters apart, and the measurement accounts for soil resistivity and parallel grounding effects . 3. Soil Resistivity Test (Optional for New Installations) Before installing or upgrading a grounding system, measuring soil resistivity helps determine the optimal electrode placement. Four stakes are inserted into the soil, and a specialized tester measures the resistivity, which influences the design of the grounding system to achieve low resistance .

Using a Multimeter (Rough Estimate)

While a multimeter can provide a rough estimate of grounding resistance, it is less accurate than specialized testers. It can be used to check continuity and approximate resistance, but for compliance with standards, a dedicated ground resistance tester is recommended .

Standards and Safety
  • IEEE and NFPA recommend grounding resistance of less than 5 ohms for sensitive equipment.
  • NEC 250.56 allows up to 25 ohms for general installations.
  • Minimum electrode length should be 2.5 meters (8 feet) in contact with soil .
Practical Tips
  • Ensure the distribution box is disconnected from live circuits before testing.
  • Avoid measuring during wet or frozen soil conditions for consistent results.
  • Record measurements in a maintenance log for future reference.
  • If resistance exceeds recommended values, consider adding additional ground rods or improving soil conductivity. By following these methods, you can accurately measure the grounding resistance of a distribution box and ensure compliance with safety standards while protecting personnel and equipment.
