Color Standards for Distribution Box Wiring

IEC standards define specific colors for conductors to ensure safety, consistency, and easy identification in distribution boxes.IEC Wiring Color Codes

The IEC 60446 standard (now merged into IEC 60445) provides globally recognized guidelines for identifying electrical conductors by color . These standards are designed to prevent miswiring, reduce electrical hazards, and simplify maintenance.

AC Systems
  • Single-phase AC:
    • Phase (Live/Line): Brown
    • Neutral: Blue (preferably light blue)
    • Protective Earth (PE): Green/Yellow striped (always exclusive for earth)
  • Three-phase AC:
    • Phase 1 (L1): Brown
    • Phase 2 (L2): Black
    • Phase 3 (L3): Grey
    • Neutral: Blue
    • Protective Earth: Green/Yellow striped
DC Systems
  • Positive (L+): Typically brown or red
  • Negative (L−): Blue or black
  • Protective Earth: Green/Yellow striped
Special Notes
  • Green and yellow must only be used for protective conductors and should not appear in any other combination .
  • Light blue is reserved for neutral or intrinsically safe conductors and must not be used for other purposes .
  • Insulated PEN conductors (combined protective earth and neutral in TN–C systems) should be clearly marked to distinguish their dual function .
Advantages of Standardized Color Codes
  • Safety: Reduces risk of electric shock, short circuits, and fire hazards .
  • Maintenance: Simplifies troubleshooting and repair by allowing quick identification of conductors .
  • Global Consistency: Facilitates international projects and integration of equipment .
Regional Considerations

While IEC standards are widely adopted in Europe, the UK, China, South Africa, and many other countries, some regions like the US, Canada, and Japan follow different color conventions (e.g., white for neutral, green or bare for protective ground) and may require careful attention when integrating systems .

Practical Application in Distribution Boxes
  • Label all terminals clearly with phase, neutral, and earth designations.
  • Use consistent color coding for all incoming and outgoing conductors.
  • Ensure green/yellow conductors are never used for live or neutral.
  • For three-phase systems, maintain phase sequence consistency to avoid equipment malfunction. Adhering to these color standards ensures electrical safety, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency in distribution boxes and electrical installations worldwide .
